Dr. Vinicius Covas Alves, researcher at the School of Communication and the Human & Nonhuman Communication Lab, took part in Congreso H 2025 as vice-director of the digital ecosystems and social media track, and presented two papers on artificial intelligence.

Context

Congreso H is an international communication and media conference. The 2025 edition was held in La Laguna (Tenerife, Spain) and brought together researchers, lecturers and professionals from more than 15 countries to discuss the challenges and opportunities of today's media and technology ecosystem. Universidad Anáhuac México took part as a partner institution.

What happened

Dr. Covas presented two papers analysing how artificial intelligence and algorithmic logics shape digital subjectivities, ecologies of meaning and society's symbolic horizon. Both propose conceptual and practical tools for a more ethical and informed use of AI in social and cultural life.

As vice-director of the digital ecosystems and social media track, he also coordinated its sessions and debates, strengthening international dialogue on how emerging technologies affect communication.

AI at the opening

At the official opening, Dr. Covas directed the artificial intelligence part of the opening audiovisual piece: using generative animation, he brought “to life” some of the most emblematic statues of San Cristóbal de La Laguna and other places in Tenerife. AI stood for the conference's central message: communication as a bridge between past and future, territories, disciplines and communities.

The piece combined his work with a script by Marco Díaz zur Linden, editing by Álvaro Berbel, creative direction by Eva Hernández, sound by Sergio Mederos and voice-over by Avelina Cruz.

Why it matters for the lab

Both papers belong to the lines Digital culture, trust and power and Communication, agents and social systems: how algorithms shape the way people see themselves and make sense of what they communicate. Coordinating a track at a conference with participants from more than 15 countries widens the lab's international network.
